What Is Barefoot Footwear?

Editorial scene of minimalist footwear on a quiet woodland path

A closer look at the shapes, soles and details that make barefoot-inspired footwear different.

A little more room up front.

A roomy toe box gives your toes more space than a narrow, tapered shape. Width is different from length, so a larger size alone may not solve a tight fit. Compare the measurements provided for the style you are considering.

What does zero drop mean?

Zero drop describes a sole with no height difference between the heel and forefoot. It does not automatically mean the shoe is thin, soft or suitable for every activity. Check each product’s specifications rather than treating the barefoot label as a guarantee.

Flexibility and ground feel.

Many minimalist styles aim for a flexible construction and less material between the foot and the ground. Sole thickness, stiffness, lining and materials still vary. The right choice depends on fit, your preferences and the places you plan to wear the shoes.

Start with your everyday.
